How to get here

The castle is off the Newark roundabout on Greenock Road (A8) in Port Glasgow.

By train

Trains run regularly to Port Glasgow from Glasgow Central, Wemyss Bay, Gourock and Greenock Central. The castle is 0.5 miles from the station.

By bus

Direct buses, mainly Clyde Flyer services, run to Port Glasgow from Wemyss Bay, Gourock, Greenock, Largs and Glasgow. The bus station is 0.5 miles from the castle.

By bike

The castle is one mile from National Cycle Route 75 between Glasgow and Gourock.

Carers' tickets

Visitors with disabilities are charged standard admission rates (adult/concession/child). Proof of disability is not required. Up to two accompanying carers receive free entry per transaction.

There is a large, level tarmac car park.

Approach to site

The site entrance is 42m from the car park along a level gravel drive and stone paved path.

What to expect at the site 

Both visitor centre and shop have step free access.

The ground floor of the castle has level access.

On the ground floor are the:

  • kitchen

  • wine cellar

  • bakehouse

  • The first and second levels include the:

  • great hall

  • gatehouse

  • gallery

Upper levels of the castle are reached by a stone staircase with a handrail. Steps may be uneven.

In the keep, a spiral staircase of 63 steps leads to the wallhead.

Light levels are low in many areas.

Assistance dogs are permitted at all our sites and within roofed areas.
