What to expect from your visit

The castle grounds and gardens, along with selected areas of the ruins, are open to visitors. Enjoy exploring the Haliburton Range, including the Great Hall, kitchen, vaults and chapel, and take time to wander through the magnificent gardens and beautiful herbaceous border.

While conservation works are ongoing, around a third of the castle ruins won’t be accessible during your visit, including:

  • Guard House

  • South Entrance

  • De Vaux range

Ticket prices have been reduced while restrictions are in place.

How to get here

In Dirleton, close to the main road. There is a small public car park approximately 100m from the castle, HES are not responsible for loss or damage to vehicles.

Carers' tickets

Visitors with disabilities are charged standard admission rates (adult/concession/child). Proof of disability is not required. Up to two accompanying carers receive free entry per transaction.

Parking

There is a nearby public car park, surfaced with smooth tarmac. Visitors can be dropped off 10m from the site by arrangement – please call 01620 850 330.

Approach to the site

The car park is about 100m from the site entrance along a road with a gentle downhill slope and through a gate.

What to expect at the site

The ticket office is entered through a door with a ramp either side. Space is restricted, but the floor is level. 

The garden’s herbaceous section is particularly fragrant in summer. It is all on the same level with bound gravel surfaced paths and a flat grass lawn. There are benches throughout. The gazebo is 13m from the visitor centre and up 12 steps (with handrail).

Toilets

There are public toilets next to the car park. The nearest adapted toilets are on Quality Street, North Berwick.

Dogs

Assistance dogs are permitted at all our sites and within roofed areas. Visitors' dogs are allowed at Dirleton Castle, but are not permitted in roofed areas. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and not left unattended at any time.
