How to get here
Although the postcode is correct, Satnav does not take you to the castle. We advise taking either J8 or J9 off the M74, follow signs to Blackwood and then pick up tourist signs for Craignethan Castle.
Strong footwear is recommended.

Parking
The level tarmac car park has no accessible spaces marked. Visitors with mobility difficulties can be dropped off at the castle gate by arrangement – please call 01555 860 364.
Approach to the site
The castle is about 85m from the car park along a steeply sloping tarmac path and a further 25m over level bound gravel.
What to expect at the site
The shop has a single step at the doorway.
The outer and inner courtyard are on the level and have short cut grass and pavement.
The ditch caponier is down a narrow (70cm wide) spiral staircase of 31 steps and has a sloping and rough floor.
Cellars, basements and the tower house upper levels are reached via various straight and spiral staircases of up to 38 steps.
Light levels can be very low in many parts of the castle in winter.
The nearest adapted toilet is about 2.5 miles away at Shawlands Park Hotel, Ayr Road, ML9 2TZ.
