Coulter Motte Hill
Coulter Motte Hill gallery
Scramble up the mound of a medieval motte-castle, in a strategic position overlooking a river crossing.
Little is known of Coulter Motte. We know it’s a mound dating back to the medieval period, but when it was constructed, what stood atop it, and the extent of the original motte-castle are all completely unknown.
The motte, considered a nuisance by the then-landowner, was nearly removed for sand and gravel in 1931. It was saved from an inglorious fate when it was taken into state care the next year.
