What to expect on your visit

Visitors can explore much of the castle and enjoy the surrounding grounds and views, but the main tower, south‑east tower and great hall are currently closed to visitors.

While conservation works are ongoing at Bothwell Castle, we’ve reduced the ticket price.

Parking at Bothwell Castle

Cars

There is a small car park around 160 metres from the castle entrance.

Larger vehicles

There is designated parking for larger vehicles. They are allocated on a first come first served basis. Availability is not guaranteed.

Accessibility

Carers' tickets

Visitors with disabilities are charged standard admission rates (adult/concession/child). Proof of disability is not required. Up to two accompanying carers receive free entry per transaction.

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs are permitted at all our sites and within roofed areas.

Parking

There is a level, tarmac surfaced car park with accessible bays. Visitors can be dropped off at the castle entrance. You should arrange this in advance by calling 07749 248 684.

Approach to the site

The castle is about 160m from the car park, along a level grass and concrete path.

Visitor centre

The ticket office and shop have step free access.

Monument

A paved pathway runs along the two main sides of the grassed courtyard. It has a gradient of 1:13.

Access to the upper and lower levels of the donjon is via an uneven spiral staircase with rope handrail on one side. The steep upper stair is 1.3m wide and has 50 steps.

The great hall is reached via a straight timber stair of 21 steps with single handrail.

Entry to the exhibition in the cellar is down 6 straight, uneven steps.
