Stirling Castle

You can discover the stories of Stirling Castle by taking one of our guided tours, which is included in your ticket price.  Our knowledgeable guides will share plenty of fascinating facts and exciting tales to really bring the history of the castle to life.

Tours begin at the castle well, which is outside the Fort Major’s House. Please ask staff on arrival for out tour times, as they do differ from day to day.

Our Secret Stirling tours go beyond the ‘Private’ signs into hidden parts of the castle visitors haven’t seen before and are not usually open to the public. You'll uncover even more history and get a fascinating glimpse into the secret life the castle.

Tours last around 90 minutes and must be booked in advance to guarantee entry. They start at the Guardroom Square (near the main entrance) at 11am and 2pm each day.

Important information

Appropriate footwear must be worn. Accessibility may be a challenge for some visitors as the Secret Stirling tour will traverse uneven surfaces, climb ancient stairways, pass through low, narrow doorways, and venture into confined spaces. The Secret Stirling tour is not suitable for visitors under the age of 12 or visitors who have a fear of heights.

Our Unlocking Noble Stirling tours give you the chance to explore this magnificent townhouse, learning about the remarkable evolution of the building and the turbulent lives of those who lived here. Along the way you can admire the beautifully recreated 17th-century interiors, exquisite furnishings, rich textiles and rare painted decoration.

Tours run on Tuesdays and Fridays from 15 September and can be booked on our dedicated Argyll's Lodging pages.

An audio guide is the perfect way to learn about the castle’s history at your own pace.

The guide can be purchased alongside your ticket and downloaded to your phone. Alternatively. you can also hire an audio guide from the ticket office. 

It's available in English (audio description available), French, Gaelic, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, and Spanish. Large print and Open Dyslexic large print versions are also available from the ticket office.
