Our audio guides tell you fascinating stories from some of Scotland’s most impressive historic places. As you explore, you can hear from experts, meet characters associated with the site and listen to gripping tales from Scotland's past.

Use our audio guides to:

How our audio guides work

Prices

Audio guides are included in ticket price, except at Edinburgh Castle, Stirling Castle and Glasgow Cathedral where there is an additional charge. 

Historic Scotland members get a 20% discount when purchasing an audio guide for Edinburgh Castle or Glasgow Cathedral. At Stirling Castle, the audio guide is free for members.

Getting your guide

At most sites, you can choose between collecting a physical audio device on arrival or downloading the audio guide to your smart phone before you arrive. You'll receive a link to download the guide in an email along with your admission ticket.

Smartphone downloads are not available for Iona Abbey, Jarslhof or Smailholm Tower. The Urquhart Castle guide is available on smart phones only.

Downloading an audio tour to your smart phone

If you have ordered an audio guide, you'll receive a download link in an email along with your admission ticket. Click on this link and follow the on-screen instructions. You’ll need to use the following browsers:

  • Android devices – Google Chrome

  • iOS devices – Safari

We recommend downloading our guides onto your device before you arrive on site. You will need a strong Wifi or 4/5G signal, and many of our sites have poor connectivity.

Make sure that your phone is fully charged and you remember your headphones or earbuds! Please note that guides are not designed to work on tablets, including Kindles and iPads.
