How to get here

The castle is beside the sea on the north side of St Andrews, between the university and the cathedral.

Car and bike parking

There is no specific visitor parking. There is on street parking, but the nearest car park is at the Bruce Embankment about ¾ mile away.

There are no bike racks at the monument. The nearest bike racks are located next to the University Library. There are some cycle lockers at the St Andrews Bus station.

Visitors with disabilities are charged standard admission rates (adult/concession/child). Proof of disability is not required. Up to two accompanying carers receive free entry per transaction.

Approach to the site

The castle is 50m from the visitor centre, over grass reinforced with narrow strips of concrete.

What to expect at the site

Access to the visitor centre is down five steps with handrails to either side or a ramp without handrails. Inside, the centre is on the level. A multi-sensory exhibition in the visitor centre includes audio-visual presentations and dioramas.

The castle is about 50m from the visitor centre, over grass reinforced with narrow strips of concrete. The castle courtyard is entered over a wooden bridge. The courtyard is grass covered and much of the castle can be seen from it

The south range first and second floors are up stone spiral steps with single handrails. The sea and kitchen towers are up stone steps with single hand rails

The mine and countermine tunnel is small and enclosed. If you have claustrophobia, respiratory problems, or any other concerns about enclosed spaces, please be aware of this before entering. No backpacks are allowed to be carried inside.

Large parts of the site are open, allowing visitors to explore the main courtyards, towers and interior spaces.

Some restrictions are currently in place, with the mine, countermine and foretower closed. But there is still plenty to see and enjoy, making St Andrews Castle a rewarding and atmospheric visit.
