What to expect on your visit

We’re carrying out conservation work to look after the top of the walls around the cathedral. While this work is underway, we have some scaffolding and fencing in place.

How to get here

The entrance to the cathedral is on King Sleet, a short distance from Elgin town centre.

By train

The cathedral is 0.8 miles, approximately a 20-minute walk from Elgin station. Trains run direct to Elgin from Inverness (45 minutes) and Aberdeen (90 minutes).

By bus

The cathedral is 0.4 miles from Elgin bus station, a 10–15-minute walk. Buses run directly to Elgin from Forres, Dufftown, Cullen and Banff. Buses between Aberdeen and Inverness call at Elgin.

By bike

Elgin Cathedral is on National Cycle Route 1, which links Inverness with Aberdeen. Bicycle storage is available.

By car

There is no specific visitor parking. Street parking is available nearby. Visitors can be dropped off at the entrance.

Accessibility

Carers tickets

In line with best practice in the visitor attractions industry, visitors with disabilities are treated on an equal basis with all other visitors and entry is charged at the appropriate admission category rate - Adult/Concession/Child. Proof of disability is not required.

We recognise that some disabled visitors may need help to visit our sites and we offer free entry for accompanying carers, these can be added when making your booking. Please note this is limited to two carers per transaction.

Parking

There is no specific visitor parking. The nearest on street parking is several metres away. Visitors can be dropped off at the entrance.

Approach to the site

The site is entered from the street over tarmac and paved pavements. The ticket office and shop is accessible over a small threshold.

Dogs

Assistance dogs are permitted at all our sites and within roofed areas. 

Visitors' dogs are allowed at Elgin Cathedral, but are not permitted in roofed areas.

Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and not left unattended at any time. Owners must pick up after their dogs.

Visiting the site

Visitors will be able to move through the buildings without following a specific route, though social distancing measures will be in place. Access to some spaces may be limited.

Access into the cathedral is down six stone steps with a central handrail and up a further flight of four stone steps. An alternative level access route is available. Please speak to staff if you require any assistance

There are numerous small level changes and archaeological remains throughout the site. The surface is mainly cut grass

There is an adapted toilet available in shop. It will be serving all visitors during this time.
