Admire the tallest and most complex piece of early medieval sculpture in Scotland.

Sueno’s Stone is a gigantic Pictish cross-slab measuring 7m tall. Its carvings are ornate and unique. We see here a rare and complex narrative depiction of a battle, and a wholly unique scene interpreted as a royal inauguration.

The stone would have once overlooked the marshy floodplains of the rivers Mosse and Findhorn. Unusually, it’s still associated with the place it was first erected, though we know little of its wider context.

Tall Pictish cross-slab known as Sueno’s Stone standing inside a modern glass and steel protective structure. The enclosure has a pitched roof and metal framing, set on a paved base within a grassy area. The stone is visible through the glass panels, with its carved surface partially illuminated by natural light.
Black-and-white line illustration of Sueno’s Stone carvings showing multiple horizontal panels filled with human figures, warriors, and horses. The panels depict scenes of combat and procession, arranged vertically along the length of the stone.
Three detailed monochrome illustrations of Sueno’s Stone showing different faces of the monument. The left panel displays densely carved battle scenes, the center panel shows a smaller section with figures, and the right panel features a large cross design with interlaced patterns and a lower panel depicting human figures.
