Access

Due to access restrictions in place as a precautionary measure while we undertake high level masonry inspections, there is currently no visitor access to this site. Find out more about our conservation work

Parking

The loose gravel car park is level.

Approach to site

The site is 20m from the car park, through a swing gate and along a reinforced grass path.

The gate can be opened fully to allow wheelchair access.

Visitor centre

The visitor centre has step-free access but is very small inside.

Monument

The entrance has a stone threshold.

The ground floor, including cellars and the kitchen:

  • is relatively level
  • there is a step at castle entrance
  • has uneven surfaces in places
  • has a step down into the kitchen
  • may have low light levels – torches are provided

The first floor, which includes the great hall and private chamber, is up a spiral staircase of 18 steps with no handrail. The upper levels are accessed by narrow spiral stone staircases with no handrail.

Grounds

A large grassed area with several trees surrounds the castle.

The site also has:

  • picnic tables
  • an apple orchard

Dogs

Assistance dogs are permitted at all our sites and within roofed areas.  

Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and not left unattended. A no fouling rule applies at all our sites.

Visitors' dogs are not permitted at Elcho Castle.
