Balvaird Castle
Balvaird Castle gallery
Appreciate the comfort and security of life as a wealthy landowner in the 1500s at this unusually complete tower house complex.
Balvaird Castle was likely built in the late 1400s. It was was home to the Murrays of Balvaird, who extended and remodelled the property over the next 150 years or so.
Most tower houses from this period now stand alone, without the other buildings and gardens which would have once surrounded them. Balvaird is rare because the visitor can still see it in a fuller context.
The sophisticated four-storey tower is accompanied by inner and outer courtyards, traces of service buildings, a formal walled garden and a large walled ‘pleasance’, or park.
The Murrays eventually left Balvaird in favour of Scone Palace. The castle was last used as accommodation for farm workers.
