On 13 June, Historic Environment Scotland announced the appointment of Katerina Brown to the permanent position of Chief Executive. Katerina will take up her new role on Monday 16 September 2024. 

Craig Mearns, Director of Operations, is currently acting as Interim Chief Executive following the recent departure of Alex Paterson.

About the role

Our Chief Executive builds on the hard work of our staff, which led to the launch of our first Corporate Plan and Business Plan

They report to the Board and are responsible for carrying out their vision and strategy. This is done by managing resources and providing assurance to the board.

As a public body, our Chief Executive is also the designated Accountable Officer to the Scottish Government.

Historic Environment Scotland has been established as the lead public body for the historic environment, building on the strength of both Historic Scotland and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS).

It acts as a key partner in the delivery of Our Past, Our Future, the new strategy and shared ambition for Scotland’s historic environment.
