How to get here

At Sumburgh, on the southern tip of the Shetland mainland.

By bus

Bus 6 and bus 6E run from Lerwick to Grutness in Sumburgh. The journey takes about an hour. The site is a short walk from the Sumburgh Hotel bus stop.

By car

Visitors can use the level gravel car park of the Sumburgh Hotel. The hotel will charge a separate fee for coach parking. You are unable to remain parked on site after your allocated timeslot expires.

Carers' tickets

Visitors with disabilities are charged standard admission rates (adult/concession/child). Proof of disability is not required. Up to two accompanying carers receive free entry per transaction.

Assistance dogs are permitted at all our sites and within roofed areas.

Parking

Visitors can use the level gravel car park of the Sumburgh Hotel.

A third party, The Sumburgh Hotel, will charge a separate fee for coach parking. You are unable to remain parked on site after your allocated timeslot expires. If you arrive out-with your timeslot, entry to the site cannot be guaranteed. Please contact out ticketing team (ticketing@hes.scot) prior to booking. Please note coach park bookings are required 7 days a week.

Approach to the site

The site is down a steep, 8m-long ramp and 150m along a wide grass drive, which ends in a level gravel path. 

What to expect at the site

The paths around the site are gravel, and bound stone. There are level changes and protruding archaeological remains. Some of the Iron Age buildings have narrow (50cm) and low entrances.

Access to the wheelhouse is down very uneven stone steps (no handrail). The top of the laird’s house is reached via a modern, metal spiral staircase (with handrail).

There are no toilets on site. The nearest adapted toilet is at Sumburgh Airport, ZE3 9UK.
