Glenbuchat Castle was built in the late 1500s to a Z-shaped plan.  It shows how sophisticated tower houses had become by this time, with its round and square corbelled turrets.

Like the castles at Auchindoun and Huntly, Glenbuchat belonged to a branch of the Gordon family. These castles demonstrate the dominance the Gordons held over north-east Scotland in the late-medieval period.

The castle was extensively remodelled at some point, probably after John Gordon of Knockespock took possession in 1701. The hall was divided in two, and its ceiling lowered to create an additional floor.
