How to get here

The castle is just outside Dunbeg, off the A85 between Oban and Connel.

By train

There are regular trains from Glasgow to Oban, where you can catch a bus to Dunbeg.

By bus

A bus runs hourly from Oban to Appin, reaching MacCallum Court, Dunbeg in 10 minutes. It operates until 6pm and does not run on Sundays. The castle is just under a mile from Dunbeg. The route to the castle is signposted from Kirk Road.

By bike

The castle is around 5 miles cycle from Oban Railway Station. Take A85 and follow shore roads along Corran Esplanade and Ganavan Road. At Ganavan beach carpark, join the cycle path to Dunbeg. Continue via quiet minor roads to reach the castle. There are racks at the castle for up to 8 bicycles.

By car

There is car parking available for visitors at the end of the road to the castle. Electric car recharging is available in an adjacent car park a short walk away.

Accessibility

Carers' tickets

Visitors with disabilities are charged standard admission rates (adult/concession/child). Proof of disability is not required. Up to two accompanying carers receive free entry per transaction.

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs are permitted at all our sites and within roofed areas.

Parking

The main car park is 200m from the castle. There is a small parking area behind the castle, 50m from the visitor centre, for visitors with limited mobility. Visitors can be dropped off 10m from the visitor centre.

Approach to the site

The visitor centre is 200m from the car park along an upward gravel track. It is then a further 25m to the castle.

What to expect at the site

The shop has step free access. 

The castle entrance is up 26 steep stone steps with a handrail. The main routes within the castle are gravel, tarmac and grass. The gatehouse is accessed via a modern staircase of 12 steps with a handrail. The upper levels of the gatehouse are reached via a narrow 28 step spiral stair with a handrail. The battlements are accessed via a spiral staircase in the gatehouse. 

The chapel is approached by a 50m rough earth path which is steep in places and can be boggy.

There is a bench outside the visitor centre and one inside the castle.
