Craigmillar Castle is suitable for:

  • ceremonies
  • photography

Superb views over gardens and parkland are a reminder that this was once a rural retreat from Edinburgh for royals. Craigmillar is one of Scotland’s most perfectly preserved medieval strongholds, with a lofty, late 14th-century tower house at its core. Mary Queen of Scots sought safe haven at Craigmillar, and the castle still retains the majestic charm it had when she stayed here.

Great Hall

Capacity: 60 people

The tower house was the first part of Craigmillar Castle to be built – and Craigmillar is one of Scotland’s earliest examples of such a castle. The Great Hall, located on the first floor, is the principal apartment in a maze of rooms. Its high vaulted ceiling, late Gothic-style fireplace and views of open parkland are sure to impress. Access is via a spiral staircase.
