Arbroath Abbey is suitable for:
- ceremonies
- photography
Make your vows in a place that’s at the very heart of Scotland’s story. Arbroath Abbey is a potent symbol of our nation – the Declaration of Arbroath was sent from here and the Stone of Destiny found by the high altar. Rising out of the ruins is the imposing, twin-towered west front, while the ‘Round O’ window – once lit up to guide sailors home – is a local landmark.
The Nave (open air)
Capacity: 200 people (standing)
Marry outdoors amidst the splendid ruins of what was once an outstandingly beautiful building. The bride can make a memorable entrance through the great west doors and then process down the length of the magnificent ruined nave. The ceremony itself is held near to the burial place of William the Lion, the abbey’s founder.
The Cloister (open air)
Capacity: 200 people (standing)
Precious little of Arbroath Abbey remains standing, but the south wall of the abbey borders this atmospheric spot for outdoor weddings. On a fine day, it is a beautifully bright suntrap.
The Sacristy
Capacity: 30 people (seated)
Invite your closest family and friends to share your ceremony in this intimate indoors setting. Alternatively, you can step inside the sacristy to sign the register in private if you’re having your wedding outdoors.
Abbot’s House
Capacity: 30 people (seated)
You can get married in either of two rooms within this imposing building – one of the most complete abbot’s residences in Britain. The first room has traces of original painted decoration, the second is a bright, open gallery space hung with paintings.
Gatehouse Range
Capacity: 60 people (seated)
A series of windows lets natural light flood the spacious upper floor of the gatehouse. It makes a bright and beautiful backdrop for wedding ceremonies – and it’s all the more special for being one of only a few buildings to survive at Arbroath Abbey.

You can hire Arbroath Abbey just for your wedding photographs, even if your ceremony will be held elsewhere.
