Overview

See for yourself why this noble residence is said to be one of Grampian’s most picturesque castles. Among the lavish details are fine carvings of its chief builder Sir William Forbes and his wife.

What to see and do

  • Be bowled over by the gatehouse, a real gem built not to deter but to impress – which it still does today
  • Spot the initials T.L. (Thomas Leiper) on the exterior of the main house – it was rare for a medieval architect to sign his work
  • Explore the family rooms and go ‘below stairs’ in the charming main house at the far end of the courtyard
  • Find Sir William’s secret hiding place for valuables
