Walking and Wheeling

The castle is within 15 minutes’ walk of various bus stops which link directly to Edinburgh city centre - for more details, check out the bus section below.

Please avoid walking on Craigmillar Castle Road where there is no pavement, by using alternative pedestrian paths through the park. And for longer walking routes, consider loops around Holyrood Park. Pedestrian route on Google Maps

Cycling

The castle is 10 minutes cycle from the Innocent Railway Tunnel, which forms part of National Cycle Network Route 1. Less experienced cyclists, including those with children, may wish to dismount for busy on-road sections between the tunnel and Craigmillar Castle Park. There is cycle parking outside the visitor centre. To plan your journey, try National Cycle Network routes.

Bus

The castle is 12-15 minutes’ walk from bus stops on Peffermill Road, Old Dalkeith Road and Little France Park, with frequent services to central Edinburgh. Refer to the Lothian Buses website for bus times and routes.

Buses stop at bus stops called ‘Craigmillar Castle Road’ on Peffermill Road. From there, walk along Craigmillar Castle Road. At Castlebrae Avenue, by the brown Craigmillar Castle Park board, make sure to follow the pedestrian path through the park to the castle.

Car

Parking is very limited at the castle, and spaces cannot be guaranteed. We would recommend using one of the sustainable travel routes above to visit the castle.
