Historic Scotland

Opening times

Castle Semple Collegiate Church is open year-round.

Overview

Admire one of Scotland’s finest medieval burial monuments in this church overlooking a loch in a quiet corner of a regional park.

This late Gothic church was founded in 1504 by John, Lord Sempill. It was to serve his castle, of which nothing remains today.

Sempill was killed fighting the English at the Battle of Flodden in 1513, and his son had the church extended to accommodate his father’s tomb. This extension is still visible today in the castle’s unusual three-sided east end.
