Arbroath Abbey gallery
Visit the Medieval Powerhouse exhibition, learn the stories about the Declaration of Arbroath and see the copy of the Stone of Destiny.
Founded by William the Lion in 1178, in memory of the martyred Thomas Becket, Arbroath Abbey was one of the nation’s grandest monasteries for almost 400 years. Much later, the Stone of Destiny had a starring role in Arbroath Abbey’s story.
Visitors can soak up the atmosphere of a place long associated with Scotland’s sense of independent nationhood. The famous ‘Round O’ window, once illuminated to guide mariners safely home, offers a striking reminder of the abbey’s connection to the sea.
As you explore the grounds, the magnificent west front, with its soaring twin-towered façade, is one of the most memorable views of this remarkable historic site. In the visitor centre, you can discover the full story behind the Declaration of Arbroath and see the abbey's history brought to life through audio-visual exhibitions.
