Advice and Support

Community groups

Get advice on setting up and running a community body or organisation

A group of young people sitting at a table work together on a local heritage project.

There are lots of places that offer support for community groups. Whether you're right at the beginning of the process, or already up and running, we can point you in the right direction.

There are lots of things to consider in the process:

  • Setting up and running a community organisation
  • Heritage specific support to establish and run your group or organisation
  • Working with volunteers
  • Sustainability
  • Other information and support

We've put together a list of who can offer advice every step of the way.

One key thing to think about is what type of community group you're setting up. Some types of community organisations are classed as 'community transfer bodies'. The Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015 specifically uses this term. The Act gives rights and powers to community bodies, so it's worth knowing the formal definition of the term.
