Properties and Collections Strategy

Help shape the future of Scotland’s historic places and collections

Four people are arranged in various poses in front of Stirling Castle, it is a clear blue sky day. In the centre, a blonde girl crouches down on one knee, facing right holding a miniature building in her hand. In front of her another women is sitting dressed in period clothing. In the middle ground between them and the castle, a young man hold open a measuring tape, he has a tool belt hanging from his waist. And the final person is on the left, they are looking into an instrument that is on a tall tripod.

We care for over 300 historic places, 43,000 objects, and 5 million archival records that tell Scotland’s story. From ancient standing stones and castles to everyday items and artworks, these places and objects are part of our shared history and our shared future.

We are creating a new long-term strategy to guide how we look after these special places and collections. Now, we want to hear what you think.

What’s the strategy about?

The Strategy sets out how we’ll:
  • Focus care on the places and objects that need it most and have the greatest potential to help people and communities.
  • Make decisions based on evidence, expert advice, and public input.
  • Work with others to protect and use these places in ways that benefit everyone.
  • Respond to climate change and rising costs with practical, long-term planning.
  • Support traditional skills and local jobs.
  • Improve access, learning, and visitor experiences.
