Admire a sacred place of enduring importance – the site of an ancient church which enjoyed royal favour, and where the annals of Iona were once kept.
The earliest masonry at Restenneth Priory dates to the 1100s and its overall building remains represent the best surviving example from Scotland of an Augustinian priory-cell layout. Alexander I had the annals of Iona transferred to this site in the 1100s, and Robert the Bruce buried his young son Prince John here in the 1300s.
Much of the church we see today dates from the 1200s.
