Imagine the noise an bustle of a medieval mercat place marked by this 1400s stone cross.

Ormiston Cross stands in the middle of the pretty 1700s planned village of Ormiston. But the cross is much older, probably dating to around 1450, making it it one of the few medieval mercat crosses surviving in Scotland.

We know little about Ormiston Cross, except that it probably dates to around the same time as the first mention of the village of ‘Ormistoun’ in the mid-1400s.

View of Ormiston Market Cross standing on a raised circular stone platform and enclosed by a black iron fence. The tall, weathered stone shaft with a small carved cross at the top is set beside leafless trees on a village street. Rows of stone houses line the road to the left, with parked cars and soft afternoon light illuminating the scene.
Rear view of Ormiston Market Cross, showing the tall weathered stone shaft topped with a small carved cross, standing on a raised circular stone platform enclosed by a black iron fence. Leafless trees frame the monument, and the scene opens onto a village street with stone houses on the right and a church building on the left. Soft afternoon light highlights the cross against a sky of blue and grey clouds.
