What to expect on your visit

Kisimul castle is closed until further notice to allow for conservation works.

Kisimul Castle, the ancient stronghold of the MacNeil clan, makes an unforgettable first impression as it rises from a rocky islet in the middle of Castlebay. Its dramatic position earned it the nickname “the castle in the sea”. Your visit begins with a short boat trip across the bay, following in the wake of the clan chiefs who once travelled the same route to reach their island refuge.

A wide bay with a stone castle on a small island in the distance, colourful boats on the water, and an old wooden fishing boat on the rocky shore in the foreground. A faint rainbow arcs above the hills.
A small boat moored beside a stone castle wall, floating in clear shallow water with seaweed visible below the surface.
A simple stone-walled room with a large wooden table in the centre, an empty fireplace, and a colourful coat of arms mounted above the mantel.
Aerial view of a stone castle on a rocky island surrounded by clear turquoise water, with a small jetty and boat visible beside it.
