The round tower is currently closed, but the majority of the site remains accessible with plenty to see.

There are no public toilets at Huntly Castle at present, after they were damaged during a storm.

How to get here

The castle is a short walk from the Square in Huntly. Follow Castle Street, then continue past the Gordon School, football ground and golf club.

By train

There are regular trains from both Inverness (1 hour) and Aberdeen (1 hour 20 mins). The castle is approximately 1 mile from the station.

By bus

Bus services numbers 10 and 10A run between Aberdeen and Inverness and stop in Huntly at the Square.

By bike

Huntly Castle is 19 miles from National Cycle Network Route 1 at Turriff. There is parking for up to four bicycles.

By car

On-site parking is available at the castle, including three blue badge spaces near the visitor centre and coach bays at the rear.

Accessibility

Carers' tickets

Visitors with disabilities are charged standard admission rates (adult/concession/child). Proof of disability is not required. Up to two accompanying carers receive free entry per transaction.

Parking

The level tarmac car park next to the site entrance has accessible bays.

Approach to the site

The main entrance door is reached via a ramp 8m long with a gradient of 1:12.

What to expect at the site

The outer buildings are all at ground level, with some steps, ramps, gravel and cobbled surfaces.

The main door of the castle opens onto stairs (with handrail) leading to the kitchen. Access to the basement is down a stone staircase of 25 steps (with handrail). The prison is down a further 6 wooden and 4 stone steps.

There are 13 wide steps (with handrail) from the main castle entrance to the ground floor. Access to the first floor is up 26 stone steps (with handrail). A further 33 wooden steps (with handrail) lead to the second floor.

A narrow spiral staircase of 92 steps (with handrail) leads from the servants’ quarters on the ground floor to the top of the tower.

The shop has step-free access.

The nearest accessible toilet is at Asda on Steven Road.

Dogs

Assistance dogs are permitted at all our sites and within roofed areas. Visitors' dogs are allowed at Huntly Castle, but are not permitted in roofed areas. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and not left unattended at any time.
