Take in the spectacular views as you explore an impressive defensive site, situated in the Pentland Hills just outside Edinburgh.
Castlelaw Hill Fort was home to an Iron Age community for several centuries. The stronghold consists of three concentric rings of ramparts and ditches surrounding a low foothill.
The earth house, or souterrain, built into the middle ditch is the main point of interest. It was probably added towards the end of the hill fort’s existence. Various theories have been put forward regarding its use. It could have been used as a hiding place, a ritual structure or perhaps a storage space.
Finds from Castlelaw suggest the souterrain was in use during the period when Romans were active in southern Scotland.
