If you’ve left the Visible Girls/Invisible Spaces exhibition feeling inspired to explore and record your community and the places that are important to you, join us over the next few weeks and learn some skills to help you get creative!

Screen printing workshop 

Saturday 17 November, 1-4pm

Have a go at screen printing in this taster session! Be prepared to get your hands inky as Kristina introduces a short history of screenprinting in fashion, subculture and rebellion, using material from the HES archives, before letting you loose to make your own unique screenprinted bag that you can take away!

This workshop is led by Kristina Royer. Kristina is an Edinburgh-based artist and independent curator. Since relocating to Edinburgh in 2016, Royer has been working as a studio assistant at Edinburgh Printmakers and as a gallery assistant at the Royal Scottish Academy.

8mm film workshop

Taking inspiration from Visible Girls: Revisited and the analogue 1980s, artist Lydia Beilby of Screen Bandita will provide the materials and skills for you to get creative making wonderful abstract animations directly onto celluloid filmstrips. This hands-on workshop will demonstrate techniques to draw, paint, etch and collage directly onto the filmstrip in order to create a colourful handmade film. Following the creativity, we will project the film so that you can see your creations come to life on screen!

All welcome, no film-making experience required, just enthusiasm!

Ever wanted to be photographed by an award-winning portrait photographer? Visible Girls photographer Anita Corbin will be hitting the streets of Edinburgh over this weekend, capturing pairs of girls (and boys) for posterity and interviewing them for social media. Who am I really? Photography workshop

Saturday 8 December, 11am-3pm

Stills Gallery, Cockburn St, Edinburgh

In this workshop, Visible Girls photographer Anita Corbin will lead a group of young people in the art of portraiture, touching on identity, representation and the influence of social media. Each participant will create a portrait during the workshop that they will print and take away. Bring your own equipment if you have it (decent cameraphone or digital camera). Equipment can be provided if not.

Bring your own archive

Saturday 15 December, 1-4pm

Summerhall basement space

Do you have any spools of 8mm film or old slides gathering dust in the attic? Bring them along and we’ll project them for you! And if you have any old photographs, stories or even memories, come and share them in our pop-up gallery space. Lydia will also be bringing treasures from her own archive for participants to enjoy: a rummage box of archival found photographs, a wealth of 8mm films, vintage viewing toys and two wind-up Russian gramophones.

This workshop will be led by Lydia Beilby of Screen Bandita, Short Film Curator for the Edinburgh International Film Festival and tutor at the University Of Edinburgh.
