Kilmartin Glen: Nether Largie Mid Cairn

  • Near Kilmartin, Argyll

Overview

View the high-status burial monument at the centre of Kilmartin Glen’s ‘linear cemetery’.

Nether Largie Mid Cairn stands at the heart of a 2km line of cairns in Kilmartin Glen. These five burial monuments all date to about 5,000 to 3,500 years ago, and are associated with the many other ritual monuments of the area, such as Temple Wood Stone Circle.

From Nether Largie Mid Cairn it’s possible to see up and down the linear cemetery.

The rare axe-head carvings found in one of the cairn’s two cists suggest that this was the burial place of a high-status individual: axes were an indicator of wealth.
