Kilmartin Glen: Baluachraig Rock Art

  • Near Kilmartin, Argyll

Overview

See where our ancestors carved mysterious symbols into rock faces, perhaps as much as 5,000 years ago.

The Baluachraig Rock Art is among a range of prehistoric carvings and monuments in Kilmartin Glen. They’re pleasingly simple works of art, the meaning of which remains a mystery to us.

The designs at Baluachraig are primarily hollows, or cups, some of them surrounded by one or more rings. We can tell that no metal tools were used in the crafting of these markings – the designs have been pecked out of the stone.
