Observe the spectacular views from the highest fort on the Antonine Wall. Bar Hill Fort is the best place to appreciate the strategic importance of the wall, while enjoying sweeping views of the Kelvin Valley.

Bar Hill Fort was one of 16 known forts along the Antonine Wall, which was built across Scotland’s central belt from AD 140. The wall formed the north-western frontier of the Roman Empire.

The foundations of the fort are still visible, and you should be able to trace the fort platform, the east gate, the headquarters building and the bath house

Rectangular stone foundations of a Roman building at Bar Hill Fort, set within a grassy clearing surrounded by leafless trees. The remains outline the structure’s walls, and a stone feature is visible near one end. The landscape slopes gently downward, with distant hills and a village visible through the trees under a bright blue sky.
Close-up of a wooden gatepost with a metal sign reading ‘Scheduled Monument – This site is protected by law. It is an offence to damage it in any way. Ground disturbance of any form, fires and the use of metal detectors are prohibited.’ Behind the gate, a dirt path curves through a woodland area with bare trees
