1 Blackness Castle
Mighty fortifications make this 15th-century castle look like a ‘ship that never sailed’.
Blackness Castle was never just a peaceful lordly residence – its enduring roles were as a garrison fortress and state prison. Today, Blackness has become a popular filming location and has starred in productions such as Outlander, Outlaw King and now Mary Queen of Scots.
In Mary Queen of Scots, the castle doubles as Linlithgow Palace, where Mary was born.
