Propose a site as a Marine Protected Area

Find out how to propose a new Marine Protected Area, or request a review of an existing area.

Anyone can:

  • propose site for designation as a Historic Marine Protected Area (MPA)
  • request a review of an existing Historic MPA
  • request the removal of a Historic MPA
  • request an update to the information in the Historic MPA record

Historic MPAs were first used in 2013, so we will look at requests to amend or remove a site only if there is good reason to do so.

Such reasons might include:

  • severe loss of the site since its designation
  • significant evidence, not previously considered, relating to the identification of the site or its merit

Proposals must be made using our application form. Application forms will be published on our portal and will include your name and address unless you opt out.

Send your completed form by email to email designations@hes.scot. We do not accept applications sent by post.

If you need help with the form, or have a question about designation, please contact us on 0131 668 8914 or email us at the above address.
