Wander the ancient graveyard of Ladykirk, set in an area occupied at least since the Norse occupation of Orkney.

Pierowall Church was first built in the 1200s, though its safe natural harbour has been focus of a settlement since at least Viking times. Much of what we see here today is the product of extensive rebuilding in the 1600s, a demonstration of the community’s wealth and the importance of the church.

A pair of grave-slabs built into the wall at the east end of the church are fine examples of 1600s funerary memorials.
