Beside Iona’s ancient ‘street of the dead’ is a finely carved stone cross dating to the 1400s.

MacLean’s Cross stands at the point where Sràid nan Marbh, or the street of the dead, met another track heading up from Port Ronain, where the modern pier can be found today.

Pilgrims filing up from the boats would have stopped here to say a prayer on their way to Iona Abbey and St Columba’s Shrine.

Low‑angle view of a tall carved stone cross showing detailed knotwork and circular patterns etched into its surface. The cross rises sharply against a deep blue sky with a few scattered clouds, emphasizing its height and textured stonework.
