Get a close-up look at some of the most complex prehistoric rock art in a glen rich with prehistoric remains.

The mysterious carvings at Cairnbaan date back about 5,000 years. A variety of different markings can be found here across three separate rocky outcrops. Its carvings are unique in their character – though we can’t be sure what they mean.

The carvings are reached by an excellent wooded path, and are best viewed in the late afternoon, when low light can help pick out their detail.

A detailed close-up of two prominent cup‑and‑ring motifs on a pale stone surface, showing concentric carved rings and smaller cup marks around them.
A rectangular outdoor information panel titled “Cairnbaan Rock Carvings,” mounted on a stone slab and set in grass. The panel contains explanatory text about the prehistoric rock art at Kilmartin Glen, along with faint blue illustrations of the carved rock surfaces.
