Admire nearly 40 carved stones, dating from early Christian to late-medieval times, within a simple, modest Argyllshire church.

Keills Chapel was built in the 1100s and was dedicated to St Cormac. It contains almost 40 carved stones, which range in dates from the AD 700s to the 1500s.

Most significant among the chapel’s collection is the Keills Cross, a free-standing high cross dating to the 700s. It’s an excellent example of fine stone craftsmanship and is very similar to crosses found on Iona. It is the only example of its type on the mainland.

A row of tall, narrow medieval grave slabs stands upright against an interior stone wall. Each slab is carved from grey stone and decorated with intricate patterns interlaced vines, swords, crosses, and abstract Celtic motifs. They are supported by horizontal wooden beams fixed to the wall. In the foreground on the gravel floor are additional gravestones lying flat or upright, while a small plaque mounted on the wall provides historical information.
The interior of the chapel viewed from the opposite end, showing a central white memorial pedestal in the back wall niche. Around it are upright grave slabs, varying in shape and decoration, arranged along the wall. In front of the pedestal is a wooden display lectern. The gravel floor supports several long, flat slabs, possibly effigies or grave covers, arranged neatly in the foreground. The walls are built of rough, irregular stones, creating a sombre and historical atmosphere.
