Admire this rare free-standing Pictish cross, still in its original location.

The Dogton Stone is a remarkable monument dating to around AD 900. Free-standing crosses were rare in Pictland, and today – apart from the famous Dupplin Cross – only fragments remain.

This cross is richly decorated on all sides with mainly abstract patterns, though you can still make out an armed horseman positioned above two beasts. The carvings are best appreciated when the light falls just right, revealing the surviving details.

A close frontal view of the Dogton Stone, covered in thick green moss, showing weathered and partially eroded carved patterns. The rough top of the stone is broken and irregular, with the surrounding field visible behind.
