Holyrood Park

Second in a series of two walks. Join an expert geologist and a Ranger on a longer guided walk to discover the fascinating geological history of Holyrood Park. Discover fossilized lagoons, walk on lava and find out more about Edinburgh’s own James Hutton (the father of modern geology).

This event will be free but booking online in advance is required.

Route contains rough tracks, uneven and boggy terrain, steep inclines and declines.

The walk is suitable for ages 12+.

  • Walk Grade: Strenuous

  • Meeting Place: Holyrood Park Education Centre, EH8 8HG

  • What to Bring: Warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear with good grips. A snack and a drink.

  • Toilets: Toilets are available at the Holyrood Park Education Centre (EH8 8HG). No toilets on the walk itself.

  • Road Closures and 3rd party events: Holyrood Park Roads are closed to vehicles at weekends. Vehicular access to the Park via Holyrood Rood or Royal Mile/Horse Wynd/Abbeyhill.

  • Parking: Free Parking is usually available at the Broad Pavement Car Park in Holyrood Park. Please be aware that this car park can be closed due to external events.

  • There is the possibility of large events taking place in Holyrood Park or at the Scottish Parliament which could restrict access or cause delays getting to the meeting point.
