Admire the towering defensive façade of a heavily fortified castle, originally built as a royal residence.

The building of Ravenscraig Castle was begun for Queen Mary of Gueldres in 1460. But its time as a royal residence was short-lived, and the castle was soon granted to the Sinclair family.

The Sinclairs completed the castle, building its massive 3.5m-thick walls, showing the impact of gunpowder artillery on castle design.

A close-up view of a round stone turret with a narrow vertical arrow-slit built into the wall. The turret stands on a rocky slope with Ravenscraig Castle’s main tower visible in the distance. Overhead, dark storm clouds gather while seabirds circle in the sky.
A ground-level view of the interior ruins of Ravenscraig Castle showing thick stone walls, a large arched doorway, and low, crumbling foundations marking former rooms. The stonework is worn and irregular, with barred windows set into the walls. Green grass fills the open courtyard, and tall trees stand behind the ruins.
An elevated coastal view of Ravenscraig Castle’s ruined stone tower on a wooded headland overlooking a wide bay. The shoreline curves into the distance with exposed sand and dark rock beds at low tide. Dense autumn-coloured trees cover the hill behind the ruins, and the calm blue sea stretches to the horizon under a bright sky.
