Important notice

Rock inspections at Samson's Ribs in Holyrood Park have revealed a risk of rock fall. Consequently, as a precaution, Duddingston Low Road and footpath is closed to all users, including pedestrians and cyclists. Specialist geo-engineers will conduct further analysis, with updates to follow.

What's going on in the park

From time to time park roads and car parks are closed due to external events. The most up to date event information can be found on the organisers' website. 

Wednesday 21 May

  • Broad Pavement car park closed.

Friday 23 to Sunday 25 May

Edinburgh Marathon Festival

  • Variety of races taking place over the weekend.
  • Broad Pavement car park closed from Friday 23 May.
  • Meadowbank and Dunsapie car parks closed/restricted at various points.
  • Road closures throughout the park and surrounding roads to accommodate various races across both Saturday and Sunday.
  • A sound system will be in operation.

Sunday 1 June

Race for Life

  • 5k & 10k race to raise funds for Cancer Research UK
  • All Park roads closed and ‘loop’ road closed as required for event

  • Broad Pavement car park closed.

Holyrood Palace Activities

  • Broad Pavement car park closed from Thursday 26 June.
  • Holyrood Park High Road closed to vehicles Monday 30 June to Wednesday 2 July.
  • Additional ad-hoc closures between Monday 30 June and Thursday 3 July.

Sunday 20 July

Walk for a Cure

  • 5k walk to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK.
  • Standard Sunday road closures.
  • Broad Pavement car park closed.
  • A sound system will be in operation.

Saturday 2 to Sunday 3 August

Edinburgh Running Festival

  • 5k, 10k and Half Marathon running festival, hosted on a 5km loop on the Queen’s Drive around Holyrood Park.
  • Standard weekend road closures.
  • Broad Pavement car park closed.
  • A sound system will be in operation.

Thursday 4 to Monday 8 September

Moonwalk

  • Taking place overnight for Breast Cancer on the evening of Saturday 6 September. Starting and finishing within Holyrood Park.
  • Road closures in place at the park from around 8pm on Saturday 6 September until around 1am on Sunday 7 September.
  • Broad Pavement car park closed Thursday 4 to Monday 8 September.
  • Dunsapie Loch car park closed Saturday 6.
  • A sound system will be in operation.

Tuesday 9 to Wednesday 10 September

Outdoor learning challenge

  • Collaborative event to promote outdoor learning for young people.
  • Queen's Drive Horse Wynd to Duke’s Walk closed both days.
  • Broad Pavement car park closed.

Sunday 14 September

Riding of the Marches

  • Horseback riders riding from the outskirts of Edinburgh to St Giles’ Cathedral in the city centre.
  • Standard Sunday road closures.
  • Police, stop and hold of traffic in place as required.
  • Will affect roads surrounding the park.

Sunday 14 September

Kiltwalk

  • Mighty Stride starting from Holyrood Park.
  • Standard weekend road closures.
  • Broad Pavement car park closed.
  • A sound system will be in operation.

Sunday 21 September

Men & Women’s 10k

  • 10K starting on Royal Mile and going through Holyrood Park.
  • Standard weekend road closures, in addition to restrictions on some roads surrounding the park.
  • Broad Pavement car park closed all day.
  • Meadowbank car park and Dunsapie car park closed for morning of event.

Saturday 27 September

Shine Night Walk

  • 10K walk starting and finishing at National Galleries. Pit stop in Holyrood Park.
  • Broad pavement car park closed 3pm to 11pm.

Noise Control

We acknowledge the proximity of some of the event sites to local residences and endeavour to do everything possible to minimise disruption.

Opening times

The High Road and Dunsapie Loch Car Park are open to vehicles from Tues to Thur, 9.30am to 3pm. A one-way system is in place for cyclists.

On Sat & Sun all roads are closed to vehicles during the day. Closures will commence from 8.15am to 9am. The roads will reopen between 5pm and 5.45pm.
