Explore noble sandstone ruins then relax in unique and beautiful gardens. Edzell Castle is the perfect blend of history and horticulture.

Edzell Castle was home to the Lindsays, a gifted, turbulent and tragic noble family. They acquired the estate in 1358 and built a brand new castle in the 1500s. That became the red sandstone ruin we see today.

It had all the beauty and luxury of its age. The highlight was, and still is, the wonderful walled garden, added in 1604. Today's visitors can amble around this great garden and seek out the delightful summer house where the Lindsays would relax on a fine summer’s evening.

The tower house is a fine example of a typical 16th-century nobleman’s residence, which once welcomed famous guests including Mary, Queen of Scots, and her son, James VI.

Red sandstone ruins of a castle. The imposing central tower house is in a well-preserved condition, considering its age.
A well-maintained walled garden with neatly trimmed hedges. The garden is enclosed by a distinctive stone wall with small turrets, carved panels and recesses perhaps once used for storing beehives.
