Myths Legends and Folklore of Edinburgh Castle

This facilitated tour of Edinburgh Castle takes 60 minutes. It suits community groups of all ages and it is most suitable for age 14 and older.

Join us in discovering the stories of Scotland’s past; the myths, misdeeds, ancient legends, and folktales that surround Edinburgh Castle. From 16th century witchcraft executions to prisoner escapes, this behind-the-scenes tour will provide an exciting and atmospheric storytelling experience. Please note this tour includes sensitively handled discussion of topics such as death, torture, dismemberment and imprisonment.

Accessibility: The tour includes stops that require audience members to access stairs and uneven surfaces. If your group requires step-free access, please let us know.

Peg dolls craft

Make your own castle character through this peg doll craft! Explore our recycled fabric swatches to add personal flair to your miniature doll. We will provide all the materials you need which include fabric, embellishments, pipe cleaners, and coloured yarn. Create characters such as a knight, a lady in waiting, or a medieval version of yourself!

Mini castles craft

Create your own unique miniature castle using our craft materials! Small matchboxes wrapped in sticky back plastic provide the perfect foundation for your creative vision. Add on colourful additions using tissue paper, or a flag with your personal symbol!

How to book activities

Room bookings

Our learning rooms are available to community groups to book for a learning activity craft, tea and coffee mornings, or a just a unique setting for your next group meeting.

Queen Anne Learning Room

The room in the Queen Anne building can host up to 30 poeple. It is equipped with PowerPoint and Wi-Fi capabilities. Located within the Learning Centre, it gives your group a quiet, private space to enjoy.

Accessibility: This room has steps leading into the space or step-free access via a lift. The room also has a private wheelchair accessible toilet.

Palace Vaults Learning Room

This room in Crown Square can accommodate 45 people. It has outlets for your own projector, but please note there is no Wi-Fi.

Accessibility: there are three steep stairs leading into the space.

To book one of our learning rooms, email us at EC.Learning@hes.scot within 14 working days of your proposed visit date.

When requesting a room booking, please provide the following information:

  • Group size

  • Date, time and duration of your requested slot(s)

  • Access needs

  • Any questions regarding room capabilities
