This research report provides an overview of Scotland’s tournament tradition, assesses the evidence and provides accounts of those tournaments held in Edinburgh. The Stewart monarchs, especially James IV embraced tournament culture.
The report supports a new theory that the tournaments of the Wild Knight and the Black Lady, held in 1507 & 1508 took place below Edinburgh Castle.

Dr Bess Rhodes
Dr Rhodes research focuses on Scotland in the 15th and early 16th centuries. After completing an MLitt in medieval history at the University of St Andrews, Bess obtained her PhD in Scottish history from the same university. She subsequently held a teaching fellowship in early modern British history at the University of St Andrews and is currently head of historical research for Smart History (a new collaboration between history and computer science, based in St Andrews). Among other recent projects, Bess has been working on a digital reconstruction of the burgh of Edinburgh as it appeared in the early 1540s. -
