Managing Change in the Historic Environment: Fire and Historic Buildings

This document is part of a series of non-statutory guidance notes about managing change in this historic environment. They explain how to apply the policies in the Historic Environment Policy for Scotland.

This guidance note sets out the principles of fire safety in historic buildings. Historic buildings can have additional fire risk and cultural significance is an important consideration when implementing changes for fire safety in a historic building.

Our historic environment can have a positive impact on our communities, places, and environment. It is important that we keep our historic buildings in use through maintaining and adapting them to make them safe and protect human life.
