Saddle quern and rubbing stone
Quern stones were used for grinding grain into flour. This type is called a saddle quern, and consisted of a large flat or dish shaped stone and a smaller hand or rubber stone. Grain was places onto the saddle stone and the rubber stone was moved backwards and forwards over it, grinding the grain down.
