Up to 1916, this headstone was being used as a gatepost near Kirkmadrine, Dumfries and Galloway. Inscribed with a Chi-Rho and a Latin biblical inscription 'INITIUM ET FINIS (The beginning and the end) this headstone unusually does not bear a person’s name. The creativity and experimentation of its design suggests that Kirkmadrine was a highly literate centre of learning in the early medieval period.
