Grave slab - unknown warrior or chieftain
This effigy represents an unnamed warrior fully equipped for war. Dressed in a leather coat, rather than the usual padded jerkin, common at this time, he has a pointed helmet and shield. The helmet bears a dragon crest and the shield a West Highland galley ship and a lion rampant. He has a refined moustache and a plaited beard. The object on his side is a hunting horn made form a whelk whell.
Originally from the Reilig Odráin burial ground near Iona Abbey. This was a favoured burial place near the remains of saints where monks would say prayers for the souls of the dead.
